Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre

The brief

The South Yorkshire County Scout Association required a new building to provide modern training facilities for delegates from across the county and indeed worldwide. The building had to compliment the extensive existing site buildings together with the ancient woodland setting.

The concept

The new Educational building was approximately 9.6m wide x 12m long to be constructed in 4 modules prefabricated at the Wintech fabrication facility. The plan layout of the building included a main open plan room, a kitchenette, a small store room and toilets. A ramp suitable for disabled access was also a requirement. External timber cladding was requested to compliment the existing buildings and the woodland setting.

The results

The new building, nestled in to the woodland setting, provides a modern, insulated and air conditioned training facility that is universally accessible.

Accessibility

Given the planned varied usage for the centre and the ethos of inclusivity for the organisation as a whole, a key element to consider was accessibility. With this in mind, we designed an entrance ramp to allow for disabled access and the interior has an open plan layout, making manoeuvrability easy for all.

Blending with the Environment

Nestled in a Woodland setting, it was important to be sympathetic to the surroundings. To compliment the buildings already on site and ensure the new building blended in with the existing environment, European redwood timber cladding was used for the exterior.
