Bespoke toilet block with access ramp

Our brief was to supply a block with 5 unisex toilets and a disabled toilet with heated washroom facilities to Scarborough Borough Council.

Being close to the beach with a lot of seasonal visitors expected, the toilet block needed to be safe, durable and easy to maintain, as well an environmentally sustainable. To protect the Scarborough toilet block against the elements, we added horizontal tongue and groove cladding to the exterior.

This unit has a 30 years guarantee against rot and fungal decay. Inside, we used an anti-slip, easy to clean flooring throughout, which is perfect for a toilet facility where you’d expect a lot of sand to be brought in on shoes.

Accessibility

Fully expecting this toilet block to be used by people of varying ages and physical abilities, we built and fitted a timber ramp to the exterior of the unit, following the installation of the building. The ramp incorporated a slip resistant decking, solid balustrades and a wheelchair height handrail.

Lighting

The lighting for each cubicle is controlled via a PIR sensor to ensure that electricity is not being wasted when the toilet block is empty. Each door was fitted with its own lift and lock toilet latch, complete with an indicator to show when the cubicle is vacant or engaged.
